Fla. State Univ. campus gunman is a lawyer who graduated from the school

A recent shooting at Florida State University has the campus on high-alert.   A man shot three people on campus before he was fatally shot himself.  It turns out that the man responsible for the shooting was an attorney who’d graduated from the university years ago.

Myron May graduated from FSU before attending law school at Texas Tech University.   All of May’s victims were hospitalized, and one of them has been released.

According to Abigail Taunton, one of the witnesses, May had recently stayed at a guest house she owns.  The shooting occurred late at night, scaring students who’d stayed late studying at the library.  The students say they were running for cover and barricading themselves behind desks and book shelves.

Police are saying that the shooting was an “isolated incident.”  But they are not revealing very many details until a press conference to be held later on today.

“This person just for whatever reason produced a handgun and then began shooting students in the library,” FSU Police Chief David Perry said.

“I ran for my life,” said Allison Kope, a freshman.  “I ran right out the backdoor. My laptop and everything is still in there. It was shock. It was just instinct. You don’t think about anything else, you just go.”

Upon seeing the incident, FSU police arrived on the scene and ordered the man to drop his gun.   They found him outside the library.  After being asked to put down his weapon, the man shot back at police, leading them to unleash a hail of bullets onto the shooter and killing him on the spot.

The university has cancelled classes for Thursday.

President John Thrasher issued this statement about the shooting:

The Florida State University community is extremely saddened by the shootings that took place early this morning at Strozier Library, in the very heart of campus, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those who have been affected.

The three students who have been injured are our highest priority followed by the needs of our greater university community. We will do everything possible to assist with their recovery.

We ask you – are you surprised that the shooter was an African American? What do you think would lead to a person feeling so angry that he might do something like this, or could it just be mental illness?

African Americans must trust Christ PERIOD for our lives. We can not live like the people of the land. God has delivered us from slavery and death and we have completely forgotten to honor and thank him with our lives.

So sad, one thing come to mind with all the debt students are facing. Prayers for all of us, thems and his victims and their families!

Yes, I was surprised that he was African American, the norm for us is not to shoot innocent people, especially if we are educated. We shoot each other over drugs every day, so I’m thinking he just went off the deep end over some woman/man. Another Black life wasted! Glad all of the young people are going to be ok. Pray for this young mans soul. Suicide by cop at the end since he could have put the gun down.

It’s mental illness. He thought he was a targeted individual (you can look that up). He thought he was being monitored remotely. Sad situation.

Schizophrenia; he thought the government was following him? Sad, but African Americans feel they can solve mental illness by prayer and that’s just not true. Hearing and seeing stuff that’s not there are symptoms of schizophrenia. And it normally begins to show in some cases in the late teens and early twenties. If you know some that’s acting and behaving in this fashion, don’t pray it away, help them get the help they need; either through medication, a therapist or both.
