Most of us have a running nightmare that we’re going to be out to dinner with friends, get a big credit card bill, and then suddenly find out that the card didn’t go through. This has happened to President Barack Obama in the past, as he often tells a story about how he and Michelle were in such dire financial straits that he once couldn’t pay for a rental car to go to an important meeting in the Illinois state Legislature.
But after becoming president, world-famous, and selling millions of books, no one thought this would ever happen to the president again. But it did. President Obama admitted during a recent speech that his card was declined when paying for dinner at a restaurant in Manhattan.
Fortunately, the president isn’t having financial problems. What happened was that the card was flagged for fraud since he doesn’t use it enough. Obama joked about the situation during a recent speech about legislation he’d recently signed to protect consumers from fraudulent credit card transactions.
“I went to a restaurant up in New York when I was there during the (United Nations) General Assembly, and my credit card was rejected,” Obama told staffers at the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau.
“It turned out, I guess, I don’t use it enough, so they thought there was some fraud going on,” Obama said, drawing laughter.
Fortunately, the first lady was there to back up her man, and she used her card to pay the bill. We also figure that the President of the United States could probably get a free meal from any restaurant in the country.
“Fortunately, Michelle had hers,” he added. “But I was trying to explain to the waitress: ‘You know, I really think that I’ve been paying my bills.'”
“Even I’m affected by it,” he said.
The President did not identify the restaurant, but on Sept. 24 Obama and his wife ate at Estela on E. Houston St. in lower Manhattan.
The couple had burrata with salsa verde and bread, endive salad, tomatoes and croquettes before they returned to their hotel shortly before 10:30 p.m., according to Eater New York.
The restaurant posted an Instagram shot of the Obamas’ order and said it was humbled by the visit.
