It’s dangerous to confront police for most citizens. However, it may be even more dangerous to be an officer if you’re in the wrong situation. A man allegedly charged at the NYPD with a metal hatchet, hitting two of the men in the process. When it all took place, the man was hiding behind a bus shelter and waited to ambush the police.
According to law enforcement, the man was stalking the cops before the attack. The police say that the attack occurred right as they were posing for a picture. One of the officers was hit in the arm and the other was hit in the head. The two officers who weren’t hit shot the man dead after the incident.
Incidents like this one are reminders that the job of law enforcement can be very dangerous. Be careful if you or a loved one chooses to become an officer.
The law enforcement official identified the suspect as Zale H. Thompson, who had a criminal record in California and had been discharged from the Navy for misconduct, according to the source.
The police officer who was struck in the head remains in critical but stable condition. The other officer, who is 24, was struck in the arm and was expected to be released soon.
A 29-year-old bystander who was struck by a bullet in the lower back was also taken to a hospital. Her condition was not known.
When asked if the unprovoked attack was tied to terrorism or to recent calls by radicals to attack military and police officers, Bratton said, “there is nothing we know as of this time that would indicate that were the case,” and a senior law enforcement official told CNN on Friday that investigators do not believe that Thompson, a Muslim convert, was driven by any radical Islamic views.
