President Barack Obama is already receiving more death threats than any president in American history. The country is more divided than ever, and gun sales went up because he was elected to serve in the White House. So, people are quite dismayed to hear that his own security detail is having coordination problems.
According to recent media reports, President Obama was on an elevator with an armed man who had a criminal record. The man was a security contractor who was with the president during his visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The president has been asked to stop in to the CDC after Ebola was confirmed to have been found to infect a patient in Dallas, putting all of those in the hospital in jeopardy, as well as the rest of the country.
A source told ABC News that the man was flagged by security for exhibting strange behavior, taking pictures and acting unprofessionally in the elevator with President Obama. That’s when they decided to look into his background.
Upon doing additional research, agents determined that the man had a criminal record, according to the source. The president was never in danger, but this is yet another black eye for the Secret Service, which is being accused of being unable to properly protect President Obama. Just this week, Congressional hearings have been ordered after a man broke through several layers of security in order to breach the White House.
But despite the concerns about the Secret Service, some say that they should be applauded for the fact that the president has been safe in the face of so many death threats. It depends on how you look at the situation.
In that startling security lapse earlier this month, 42-year-old Omar Gonzalez, armed with a 3 ½-inch serrated knife, scaled the north fence at the White House, stormed through the unlocked North Portico door, and barreled past an agent into the East Room minutes after the First Family had departed the White House. Gonzalez was indicted on federal and local charges Tuesday.
One day after the Sept. 19 incident, an unauthorized vehicle was cleared into the White House compound.
Additionally, in 2011 a man fired several rounds at the White House while some of the president’s relatives were inside.
