Police say that Jonathan Dwyer of the Arizona Cardinals broke his wife’s nose during an argument by head-butting the woman in the face. This is the most recent embarrassment for the NFL, which is already fighting against damning allegations of being light on domestic violence.
According to police, the fight happened as the two were fighting over another woman as she confronted him about cheating on her. According to public records, everything happened on July 21st of this year. That’s when police say that Dwyer attacked his wife and was arrested.
Other athletes, including Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy have been connected to alleged violence among NFL athletes. The Dwyer case is being reviewed by the league and analyzed under the personal conduct policy. He has been put on the reserve/non-football illness list, so he cannot play for the Cardinals at all this season.
For his role in the altercation, Dwyer is being charged with aggravated assault, misdemeanor assault, disorderly conduct, criminal damage and preventing the use of a telephone during an emergency.
Rev. Jesse Jackson and Bryant Gumbel are openly speculating as to whether or not the NFL’s many concussion lawsuits are playing any part in these outbursts of violence. It is speculated that a large number of NFL players are dealing with struggles from brain damage, and this is causing them to do things they might not otherwise do.
