Everyone loved Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But even though you probably watched him on the show for years, you may not know a lot about him as a person. Avery died on New Years Eve in 2013 after a long and illustrious career.
Born in 1945, Avery was listed as #34 in the list of TV’s greatest dads of all-time. He was also in interesting projects like the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and “That 70s Show.”
Avery was raised in Atlantic City and went to the Vietnam War right after high school. After that, he moved to LA to write poetry and TV scripts. His very first film role was in The Blues Brothers in 1980, so by the time he hit The Fresh Prince, he’d already spent quite a few years on television, stage and film.
This video below was taken by TMZ two years before he died. It brings back memories for us, so we thought you’d find it interesting. Enjoy!
